What's Tricky This Coming Week ???
With produce travelling from all corners of the globe there is always something you should stay away from.
This page is designed to ensure you don’t get caught out by listing something on your menu when supply is proving slightly tricky.
Fresh produce revolves around the climate so changes happen frequently, make sure you come back every week to find out what will be difficult during the coming week.
Peaches
Last week we saw the apricots start to disappear and get ready word from Europe we may soon start to see fresh peaches moving away as the European season starts to come to an end.
South Africa will be the next stop but these fruits won't be available until early to mid-December so please be careful.Severe Heat
You need to be aware that this radical heat spell is starting to cause damage to soft leaf and rapid growth summer crops but we are also concerned around late summer harvests such as carrots, potatoes, parsnips onions etc
These will most definitely be affected by this crazy dry spell we are witnessing, we could still be talking about the damaging effects of this heat in November!!
Please take a second to think about all thats in the land trying to grow as hot, hot, hot out there in the fields...Dairy Trouble
Just a peek at the grass instantly shows signs of grass death as the heat is scorching the land.
It’s the first time in decades that cows are having to be fed winter silage at this time of year due to lack of growth.
This will result in rising dairy prices which will affect butter and cheese in the near future.
Cob Nuts
The season for cobnuts is over and if you are using this fresh nut you need to start to hunt down another option as the nuts are no longer being picked and the squirrels are enjoying the leftover the crop.
These trusty fresh nuts won't be back around until next year now.Carrots
No rain equals lots of pain.
UK carrot crop is already seeing signs of damage prices are rising rapidly as yields are extremely low so please be warned around all things carrots this could also affect prepared options.Lollo Rosso
The heat has finally caught up with the northern crops of Lollo Rosso.
The heads are small and have really struggled this year. Looking across the UK all growers are in the same situation, we still have supply but be warned the head sizes are smaller than usual.
Potato Trouble
This time of year is critical for the most overused and often forgotten about crop we grow in the UK.
Potatoes are used on most things and over the years there is no doubt it has turned into a commodity crop that we all just expect to be available in good supply and quality at all times.
We have all been aware of the severe heat we have faced and the impending issue with crops that are still in the ground due to lack of water.
We will be doing an indepth piece on the potato forcast over the coming week but of late we have been receiving warnings from potato growers and processors across the land warning of a troublsome season ahead.
Early lifts of the crop are showing signs of lack of large graded potatoes which are used for bakers, chips etc along with reduced yields. Just take a look at the words flowing from Koffman’s!!!!
There isn't a shortage just now but please be warned as this coming 18/19 season could be extremely troublesome for our trusty tuber as the rest of the crop is lifted and inspected.
