What's Tricky This Coming Week ???
With produce travelling from all corners of the globe there is always something you should stay away from.
This page is designed to ensure you don’t get caught out by listing something on your menu when supply is proving slightly tricky.
Fresh produce revolves around the climate so changes happen frequently, make sure you come back every week to find out what will be difficult during the coming week.
Tender Stem Broccoli
We have moved into UK crop tender stem but the heat we are all witnessing at the moment is so intense crop failure is on the horizon.
Supply from Kenya is also in a severe state so please be warned supply may be tight for a few weeks until it regnerates its vigour.Cauliflower
You may notice that the head size are more medium than large at the moment and the curds are a creamy colour.
This is totally down to stunt growth as the cauliflowers need a good drink, the blistering heat is causing the crops to stop growing as they should which is changing the makeup of the meaty curds.
Demand is high and availability could become slightly difficult this week so watch out.Conference Pear & Bramley Apple
Stored fruit is starting to run dry and with high demand for the trusty Conference Pear & Bramley Apple there is only one thing the growers can do to try and stem the flow of demand and which is increase the price.
Supply is still ok but prices are rising rapidly – if you are wanting an alternative pear the Packham pear or Honey scented Asian pears are here for you to get excited about.
Oranges
Severe hail storms over South Africa last week have severely damaged crops, just look at that picture of the fruits that got battered from huge frozen ice balls!!!
We won’t instantly see an issue but over the coming weeks there could be some disruption to supply/prices as the crop is starting to be picked and transported.Savoy Cabbage
UK crops of Savoy cabbage are starting to struggle with the heat and lack of water.
Younger heads which are just starting out life in the fields have failed which could have a knock-on effect in a few months time when they would have normally reached maturity.
Prices are on the rise this week please watch outIceberg/Cos /Little Gem
Prices are rising for the trusty iceberg, cos & little gem as crops in the UK are struggling due to lack of water and severe heat.
We are having to look to Spain for iceberg this is a rare occurrence in summer months as it’s peak season.
Watch out as prices are on the rise
