What's Tricky This Coming Week ???
With produce travelling from all corners of the globe there is always something you should stay away from.
This page is designed to ensure you don’t get caught out by listing something on your menu when supply is proving slightly tricky.
Fresh produce revolves around the climate so changes happen frequently, make sure you come back every week to find out what will be difficult during the coming week.
UK Strawberry
Its time to shed a tear as this week we will see the UK strawberry season come to an end for another year.
This is early compared to last year but with the severe heat we have all witnessed the strawberry plants have been put under severe pressure this year resulting in diminishing energy and the season-closing early.
We may get through to the second part of the week but we will be switching into imported crop during the later part of the week.Candian Cherry
Those bold, meaty red cherries have come to an end as the Canadian season comes to a close in the next day or two.
Fresh cherry will disappear for a few months and usually reappears just in time for the festive celebrations.
The Canadian crop has been magnificent but we sadly have to wave goodbye. Frozen, dried, marinated, tinned and puree is all still available if you still need a cherry fix.LED Tomatoes
The team at Stockbridge have been busy this past week removing the summer vines from the LED facility as the intercropping commenced.
The autumn/winter vines that will take us through until March next year are not quite ready to produce ripened fruit so we will be a few weeks without a supply of the amazing Northern grown LED tomatoes.
DON’T panic we will let you know when they are back!!!
UK Lettuce
The heat has most definitely had disastrous effects on this year's lettuce season as the UK growers have called it a day and we are having to look to France for the supply of head lollo, bianda and Oak Leaf.
The French season is also struggling slightly so prices may rise for a period until everything finds its way.Leeks
Our good friends at Seddon leeks are warning of tight supply over the next few weeks as the UK crop is starting to become slightly tight in supply.
European supply is also struggling so prices will be on the rise as everything tightens up until new crop arrivesSalads Items
Tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers are all on the move as the Dutch season starts to come to a close.
The next stop will be the salad bowl in Spain but they aren’t ready yet.
Coupled with high European demand prices are on the rise as everything starts to tighten up volume wise.
Potato Trouble
This time of year is critical for the most overused and often forgotten about crop we grow in the UK.
Potatoes are used on most things and over the years there is no doubt it has turned into a commodity crop that we all just expect to be available in good supply and quality at all times.
We have all been aware of the severe heat we have faced and the impending issue with crops that are still in the ground due to lack of water.
We will be doing an indepth piece on the potato forcast over the coming week but of late we have been receiving warnings from potato growers and processors across the land warning of a troublsome season ahead.
Early lifts of the crop are showing signs of lack of large graded potatoes which are used for bakers, chips etc along with reduced yields. Just take a look at the words flowing from Koffman’s!!!!
There isn't a shortage just now but please be warned as this coming 18/19 season could be extremely troublesome for our trusty tuber as the rest of the crop is lifted and inspected.
